Welcome to the first cohousing community in Olympia, WA!

We are excited to be building the first cohousing community in Olympia, Washington. We are building 19 homes on about 3 acres that we own on the west side of Olympia.

We will build a 2,000-3,000 square foot common house for community activities and shared resources (large kitchen and dining area, laundry, recreation room, kids space, storage, and guest facilities). We will have a large vegetable garden, central green space with a play area for the kids, a workshop, community chickens, and an enclosed area for bikes. We are excited about being the first cohousing project in the city of Olympia.

We are actively recruiting new members! Contact us for more information.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center has named our builder, Scott Bergford of Scott Homes, Inc as "Builder of the Year" of green, custom homes for 2009 in its EnergyValue Housing Awards!
Congratulations, Scott!

Play Weekend in Grayland, WA

Why I'm Excited About Cohousing

Under Construction!

We broke ground last summer and we're expecting that the first phase of our building will be complete before the end of 2009. We've hired a built-green certified builder who is experienced in minimizing the use of toxic materials.

Our homes will be energy efficient with solar hot water and radiant floor hear. Our property is located at the end of a quiet street, bordering a wooded ravine. We've cleared some trees (kept as many as possible), installed the storm water system, and regraded the property.

We have started construction on our first two buildings, with the third building due to start before too long. All three buildings will need to be completed before we can occupy any of the buildings. The third building will have one home reserved as the temporary Common House, until we build the real Common House in phase two.

Buildings B and C have concrete foundation and walls. Water pipes run across the floor showing where bathrooms and laundries will be.

There is no wood, as we're not "fire truck ready," yet.

Construction Materials!

After we got back from our cohousing play weekend at the beach on Monday, we found lots of construction material on our building site.

We are now ready to build vertically, from the concrete, up! It's been such a long time coming that it is hard to believe that it is finally here.

Now, before getting too excited, let's have a reality check. We have construction materials to start framing the buildings, but no construction workers to do the framing. Apparently, the sub-contractor is busy working on other projects and won't have workers available until next week. So, we wait for Monday to come.

In the meantime, it is very exciting to have all the preliminary work done, approved, and out of the way. Now, we just need some construction workers who know how to build a house.
